( MSERA )

Course Outline​

This half-day awareness training is designed to equip marina and shipyard personnel with essential knowledge and practical skills to respond effectively to emergency situations. The course covers the safe use of portable fire extinguishers and fire hoses, muster and evacuation procedures, casualty management, and an introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS). It blends theoretical instruction with hands-on practice to build competence and confidence in managing real-life emergencies in a maritime and shipyard environment.

Course Aims

To provide participants with the fundamental understanding and skills required to respond safely and effectively to emergencies in a marina or shipyard setting, with a focus on fire safety, evacuation, casualty care, and incident coordination.

Course Objectives​

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify and correctly use portable fire extinguishers based on fire type and extinguisher classification.
  2. Demonstrate safe fire hose deployment and handling techniques in simulated emergency scenarios.
  3. Describe and follow muster and evacuation procedures, including alarm signals, muster points, and personnel roles.
  4. Perform basic casualty assessment and response, including the application of the DRSABC method and placing a casualty in the recovery position.
  5. Explain the basic structure and roles within the Incident Command System (ICS) and understand how communication and coordination are managed during emergencies.
  6. Participate in simulated emergency response activities and demonstrate appropriate actions under observation.

Pre-Requisites

There are no pre-requisites for the MSERA program.

Appraisal Process​

Practical Assessment

Participants are observed during hands-on exercises for:

  • Correct extinguisher use.
  • Proper hose handling technique.
  • Active participation in muster and evacuation drills.
  • Application of casualty management principles.
  • Engagement in ICS roleplay or scenario.

Short Written/Verbal Quiz (Theory Assessment)

A short assessment (10–15 minutes) including:

  • Multiple choice or short answer questions.
  • Covers fire types, extinguisher use, evacuation protocol, casualty response, and ICS basics.

Certification

Learners will receive a UK registered NOCN Certificate Level 2 for Marina and Shipyard Emergency Response Awareness. Certificates are awarded from the UK and will be forwarded post course in soft copy to the individuals and/or the employer point of contact.
